It is Round 3 of the 2024 SuperMotocross World Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada, and just like last year, three riders are to race against eachother, winner-takes-all showdown for the $1 million prize in the 450 division. But that’s not all on the line. On Saturday night, a massive $4.6 million will be up for grabs: $385,000 for the race and $4.2 million for the championship payouts across both divisions of the race.
Hunter Lawrence’s win the week before now at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth set the stage for three riders to control their fate in the final showdown. Hunter leads by just one point over Chase Sexton, while Jett Lawrence sits nine points behind in third. A Jett victory paired with a second-place finish from Hunter would hand Jett the overall win, thanks to the tiebreaker rule favoring the rider with the most playoff wins. Jett claimed victory earlier at zMax Dragway in Concord, North Carolina, in another dramatic tiebreaker scenario where he bested Eli Tomac.
If Hunter takes the win in Vegas, he would finish the 2024 season the same way Jett did in 2023—with a fourth-place finish in Round 1 followed by back-to-back victories in the final two rounds.
According to Clint Fowler at WeWentFast.com, Aaron Plessinger can still win overall, but he needs a perfect storm: Hunter must finish seventh or worse, Sexton sixth or worse, and Jett fourth or worse. Ken Roczen and Cooper Webb have a similar path to victory, requiring Hunter to finish eighth or worse, Jett fifth or worse, and Tomac third or worse. Tomac remains in contention if Hunter and Chase finish off the podium, and he could still win overall if Jett finishes third.
In the 250 division, Haiden Deegan is in control, but Tom Vialle could snatch the red plate if Deegan finishes fourth or worse.
Those are tough scenarios, though, as Deegan has won all four 250 motos so far and posted the fastest lap in three of them.
As regards the race this what is Jett Lawrence has to say in a recent interview:
“I will be coming into this race ready to leave everything on the track. It’s the final showdown, and with the stakes at this height, there is no room for holding back. We have all worked so very hard to get here, but only one rider is walking away with that million dollars. I plan to make sure it’s me.” – Jett Lawrence on the 2024 SuperMotocross Finale
